Malacca Road clean-up brings results

The issue of illegal dumping on Ryde Place and Malacca Road has been a longstanding problem.

A MASSIVE clean-up of an illegal dumping hotspot in Glen Hills has been welcomed by Ward 110 councillor, Aamir Abdul.

The issue of illegal dumping on Ryde Place and Malacca Road has been a longstanding problem, explained Abdul, with little or no consequences for those involved in the illegal activity.

The clean-up, which was coordinated by Abdul and the eThekwini Municipality’s Area Based Management (ABM) Unit, has seen a complete transformation at the intersection, which at one stage was littered with various forms of building rubble, wood and other forms of rubbish.

“Because we had failed to get other departments to act on the illegal dumping, we liaised with the ABM Unit on this specialised project. They have spent close to a month in Glen Hills but particularly on Malacca Road. Hundreds of bags of rubbish and other material were removed by tipper trucks and a TLB, and the process is still ongoing. The good news is the project is not yet done – the next phase is to clean up areas where illegal dumping has taken place within the settlement, close to the ablution blocks.

“This particular area where the Malacca Road Informal Settlement is situated, is under land claim, so there is not much infrastructurally we can do, however, the City does need to implement its policy on illegal dumping to stop this from getting out of hand. I will be calling another public meeting soon to debrief residents on this project and speak about how we can maintain it,” he said.

Abdul added that talks with security companies over the installation of cameras – as another potential deterrent against illegal dumping – were still ongoing.
