Beware of false shutdown messages warns Durban North/Umhlanga CPF

The CPF says some messages are ‘sewing’ fear in the general public.

THE Durban North/Umhlanga CPF has urged residents not to share unverified messages regarding the National Shutdown on Monday, March 20 and a strike by the SA Policing Union (SAPU) on March 17.

The National Shutdown has been called for by the political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), over the electricity crisis, service-delivery issues and what they refer to as the ‘mis-leadership’ of President Cyril Ramaphosa. The EFF have also called for the resignation of the president.

The SAPU strike is related to a 10% pay increase demand.

Public relations officer for the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF, Darryl Oliver, said one particular message from a Colonel Michiel Strydom alleges that citizens will not ‘enjoy any protection from the SAPS’ due to the strike.

The message goes on to list an action plan of how to prepare for the shutdown.

“We can confirm that a message circulating online is not written by a SAPS member, and its contents do nothing more than to sew unfounded fear in the general public. With regards to the SAPS strike: SAPS members who are on duty are not permitted to strike, and only those off-duty may attend a strike or picket line but are expected to return for their shift or be subject to disciplinary action.

“We would like to assure the public that the DNU CPF are in regular contact across multiple levels and divisions in law enforcement, and will advise the public as soon as possible if we are made aware of any developments that would threaten the general public,” he said.
