Residents raise concerns at Ward 35 meeting

The Masakhane public-participation meeting was started to strengthen communication between the eThekwini Municipality and its residents.

RESIDENTS had a chance to engage with and raise concerns with several eThekwini Municipality departments at a public meeting held at Glenashley Junior Primary School last week.

The meeting, which was called by Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman, was part of the City’s Masakhane Outreach Programme.

The Masakhane public-participation meeting was started to strengthen communication between the eThekwini Municipality and its residents.

Present at the meeting were representatives from various departments, including the Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) and the Electricity Department, which the majority of questions from residents were aimed at.

Residents questioned why various green spaces in Glenashley had not been cut back for months, why the repair of streetlights had not taken place, and the lack of maintenance and law enforcement at the La Lucia taxi rank.

One resident also pointed out that they had tried for several weeks to get the municipality to remove a branch hanging precariously on overhead cables near the school but to no avail.

La Lucia resident Buzz Bolton also questioned when repairs to the bridges in the Virginia Bush Nature Reserve would be carried out.

Nicole Bollman said that while she welcomed residents asking questions of municipal officials, she was disappointed with the turnout.

“Overall, the turnout was low, and it was disappointing, especially given that residents have raised several concerns with me around the lack of service delivery. There were no timelines given on when any of the work would be carried out. There was a promise made to repair the fallen streetlight on Adelaide Tambo Drive, but that has not happened. There were quite a number of questions for the Parks Department, particularly in the upkeep and maintenance of green spaces in Glenashley. It is also important to note that this won’t be the last of the events, and I hope to see more residents attend in future months,” she said.
