“He was armed with a firearm and demanded cash, but the victim did not have any cash with her. The suspect then demanded that she drive to a nearby bank to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money,” he said.

“The suspect threatened to kill her if she did not comply. She drove to a nearby bank, and the suspect waited in the car for her to return with the cash,” added Powell.

When the woman arrived at the bank, she managed to alert the staff about what had happened to her.

At about 10:20, the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre was alerted to the incident and swiftly responded to the scene.

“When the suspect realised that the woman had not returned to the vehicle, he fled with her white Mercedes Benz,” said Powell.

After a short track, the vehicle was recovered at a shopping mall in the uMhlanga Ridge area.

The vehicle was then transported to the Durban North SAPS for further investigation and processing.

The Durban North SAPS are currently investigating a case of kidnapping.
