Crusaders coach confident ahead of new season

Ronnie Uys, head coach of the senior team, believes the Durban North club can take its place back in the upper echelons of KwaZulu-Natal’s club scene.

AFTER finishing in the middle of the table of last year’s Optimum Premier Division Moor Cup, the Capital Legacy Crusaders are determined to turn around their fortunes for the new season ahead.

Ronnie Uys, head coach of the senior team, believes the Durban North club can take its place back in the upper echelons of KwaZulu-Natal’s club scene.

Uys, who is now taking up his second stint as head coach with the team, will be joined by assistant forward coach Colin Eales and backline coach Riaan Swanepoel.

“I feel confident in the team around me. Colin has coached the second team and has been involved with Crusaders for a number of years, and Riaan brings a wealth of experience, having played provincial rugby for the Sharks. I’m excited to be back, having been a coach and a player in this club. Our collective hope is to bring this club back where it belongs, to the top of the table. With the talent and depth of our squads, I don’t feel we are a mid-table team,” he said.

Uys also spoke on his team’s preparation for the various tournaments this season, including the Flya Pre-Season Tournament, the Premier Division and the Murray Cup.

“We started off very well, and I’m really happy with the turnout of players. We have got a nice mix of young and experienced players. I believe if we start focusing on the fundamentals, we can really leave our mark on the competition this year. We recently chose our captain for the senior team in the form of George van Niekerk who is a natural leader and reads the game extremely well. He is also a senior here at Crusaders, having played his rugby here for five years. Our goal is to compete and go for a trophy. There is a lot of new energy at the club, and the boys have already put in lots of hard work,” he said.

The club trains on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 18:00.
