Grub on the go in Durban North

Two friends decided to use their skills in cooking and hospitality which gave rise to a small business of their own.

SMALL businesses are popping up in almost every neighbourhood, and more people are using their talents, whether it’s their bread and butter or to simply create a second income stream.

Two talented women, Andiswa Mkhize and Zwakele Ntuli, did just that. They took their passion for people, cooking and hospitality and made it their ‘hustle’.

If you frequent the Sunningdale area, you’ll notice their food truck at the corner of Addison Drive and uMhlanga Rocks Drive.

Their business is aptly named A-Z Catering because A and Z are the initials of their first names.
Speaking to Northglen News, Mkhize said she and Ntuli had tried other jobs out before finally settling on catering.

“I have a diploma in hospitality, but I have always loved cooking. Zwakele studied to become a chef at an international hotel school. Together, we decided to join forces and open our own business,” said Mkhize.

She said that after they were granted a vendor’s licence last year, they began operating from the food truck. They soon became busy with events, as well, and couldn’t find reliable staff to keep the food truck in operation, so they closed it temporarily and reopened again last Monday.

“The Sunningdale community has been great. People support us, and parents also stop by and get their children something to eat. We appreciate the support,” she said.

“When Zwakele and I drew up our business plan, the food truck was something we were both excited about. We can express ourselves through our cooking,” said Mkhize.

She said it also made more sense to have a food truck than premises as it was cheaper than paying rent and it was mobile so they could also attend markets and events.

The menu is extensive: Boerewors rolls, slap chips, curries and kotas, and even tripe and oxhead feature.

They are now waiting for a Certificate of Food Acceptability to get onto food-delivery apps.
The food truck is open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00.
