Tourist drowns on uMhlanga Beach

The man and his wife were on holiday from Russia.

A 47-YEAR-OLD man on holiday from Russia with his wife, drowned on uMhlanga Beach this morning, in the vicinity of Durbanview Park where bathing is not permitted.

Netcare 911’s Shawn Herbst said they received a call about the drowning at about 11:45. A helicopter was dispatched to search for the man’s body.

“He was swept out to sea by a rip current.  His wife was on the beach, too. After a short search, the man’s body was located, and a kite surfer pulled him to shore,” said Herbst.

“Paramedics found that the man had a faint pulse, and they conducted extensive advanced life-support resuscitation, however, the man died on scene,” said Herbst.

This is the second drowning to have occurred on uMhlanga Beach this week.

A 29-year-old from Phoenix drowned at uMhlanga Beach on Monday night at about 19:30 after lifeguards had gone off-duty. A search is still being conducted for his body.
