“They are also fun to eat, you can add fruit to them or spread butter and jam to make a muffin sandwich, however you choose to eat them, they are always delicious,” she said adding that vanilla is her favourite flavour.

The Umlazi resident said she started baking in 2019 but only baked for her family.

“After getting many compliments from them, I started playing around with more flavours and trying something new now and again.”

One day, Shelembe and her family went to the beach with a huge container full of muffins.

“Because we had extra muffins, we came up with an idea to sell them. People loved them and suggested that I should start baking more often and from that day I never looked back.

“My niece and her friends helped me to sell the muffins locally, they had pretty good marketing skills. I had new customers texting me everyday. Due to the high demand I started taking orders.

The wife and mother said she enjoyed it so much that she started doing it fulltime.

“I go out of my way to make this business a success as I sometimes wake up at dawn, bake and go sell at the taxi ranks. I also make scones and themed celebration cakes. It is so fulfilling to do something of your own and enjoy it,” she said.

Shelembe advised upcoming business owners to have a positive mindset and be patient with your customers.

She added that appearance also matter, “you have to be clean especially when you selling food.”
