Circuit trip at major substation leaves Durban without electricity

In October last year, an explosion at this substation caused a widespread power outage in Durban.

THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that there has been a massive power outage in the city due to a circuit trip at Klaarwater Major Substation.

This happened just before 15:00 on Monday.

“The Electricity Department is aware of the massive outage due to a circuit trip at Klaarwater Major Substation, and teams are en route to rectify.”

In October last year, an explosion at the 275 Klaarwater Major Substation caused a widespread power outage to about 50% of the city.

Today’s outage happens as the City is preparing to host the eThekwini Energy Transformation Summit at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre on March 1 and 2. Several experts in the field are expected to discuss the current energy challenges facing South Africa.
