La Lucia’s fashionista supports a ‘pawsable cause’

After finding out she had a passion for animals, Ntandwenhle decided to help the ones in need.

AN 11-year-old from La Lucia, with her flair for all things fashionable, is using her talent to do her bit for animals in need.

Ntandwenhle Khuzwayo started Project Paws at the end of 2022. She sews scrunchies which she sells for R20.

All proceeds are used to purchase supplies, such as food, blankets and toys for the Durban and Coast SPCA.

“Last year I, discovered I was obsessed with animals, especially puppies. I learnt that so many animals are in need of food and basic supplies so I started Project Paws,” said Ntandwenhle.

She said too many dogs were being mistreated and abandoned and that the SPCA really needed assistance.

“The scrunchies don’t take much time to make and they’re easy to sell as I have so many clients at school,” she said.

When Ntandwenhle turned ten, she developed a passion for fashion. She designed 30 dresses on her iPad and asked her mom to buy her a sewing machine.

“My mom said she would maybe buy me one for my 11th birthday. I was so impatient and kept on nagging her. My dad was also skeptical but eventually my mom gave in and bought me a sewing machine as an early birthday gift,” said Ntandwenhle.

She then attended sewing lessons where she learnt the basics. Soon Ntandwenhle was making scrunchies, skirts, T-shirts and pants.

“Our animals really need help, and together we can make a difference and better their lives,” she said.
