Suspects in Avoca shootout face attempted murder charges

One of the suspects was fatally wounded in the shootout with police.

TWO suspects who were involved in a shootout with police on Wednesday on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) are facing charges of attempted murder.

The suspects, aged 24 and 27, are due in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.

They were part of a gang of three suspects, one of whom was killed in a shootout with police.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said it is alleged that the three men robbed a pedestrian of his cellphone on Prince Mhlangana Road just after 12:45.

“Police were notified that three suspects boarded a taxi and they were followed. The suspects got off on Chris Hani Road, and a shootout ensued. One of the suspects was fatally wounded while the other two were placed under arrest while fleeing into the bushes.

“Police recovered a pistol with three rounds of ammunition from the deceased suspect. Charges of inquest, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition were opened at Greenwood Park SAPS,” Gwala said.
