Local florists weigh in on the perfect flowers for Valentine’s Day

Caxton Local Media recently spoke to three florists to find out what their favourite flower is to receive on Valentine’s Day.

WHEN it comes to Valentine’s Day, we all think of roses as being the most traditional type of romantic flower to gift to our loved ones.

In recent years, roses, and in particular red roses, have become the most quintessentially romantic flower.

While red symbolises romantic love, there are also other colours and indeed flowers or bouquets we could gift to celebrate relationship milestones.

Caxton Local Media recently spoke to three florists from Flowers on Kensington in Durban North to find out what their favourite flower is to receive on Valentine’s Day.

They also weighed in on their floral inspirations and bouquet options for their loved ones.

Hayley Tilley

For general manager of Flowers on Kensington Hayley Tilley, Valentine’s Day is their busiest day of year.

“Gifting flowers for Valentine’s Day is a tradition. Without a doubt, it is our busiest day of the year. It’s a way of showing your love for your partner or friend or family member. Everybody loves flowers, and they bring a smile to people’s faces. We source our flowers fresh from the Springfield Park market every day.

“While red roses are the traditional Valentine’s Day gift, I feel lilies, lisianthus and snapdragons also make beautiful gifts. Personally, I love orchids and lisianthus as an alternative to red roses. Not only are they beautiful but they range in colours which adds so much variety,” Tilley said.

“I’ve been a florist for 17 years, and while I do adore roses, I love orchids as a gift. Not only because they last longer but I can also re-plant them. If I got orchids instead of roses I would be so pleased,” she said.

Nobuhle Zama

“I don’t particularly have a flower preference, but I love floral baskets. I’m more of a traditionalist in that I like red and white flowers in a bouquet or in a basket arrangement. I’m looking forward to Valentine’s Day, but if you are looking to get something special for your loved one, then red and white roses are the way to go.”
