New deputy mayor elected for Durban

ZANDILE Myeni from the National Freedom Party has been appointed the new deputy mayor of eThekwini.
The announcement comes after the ousting of the previous deputy mayor, Philani Mavundla, in last year’s December Full Council meeting.
Myeni was voted in with 128 votes out of 209 ballots.
The vacant position of the Chief Whip was also finalised through a nomination and election process.

Patience Sishange was voted as the new Whip of Council with 128 votes also.
This follows the resignation of the previous Whip of Council, Thembo Ntuli, who resigned from the post during the Council Meeting in December.
Ntuli is now the acting chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee.
eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said the nomination and election processes were overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission to ensure a fair and transparent process.
“The election process was observed by the Council Administration Unit and is in line with the provisions contained in Schedule 3 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, No 117 of 1998, in a special reconvened sitting of Council today, 03 February 2023 at the Durban International Convention Centre,” he said.
