Broadway Precinct’s clean and green project blossoms

'The Heart of Durban North' works with various roleplayers in a cleaning and greening project in the area's business district.

SINCE the formation of a collective involving local businesses, spearheaded by Kensington SuperSPAR – the Durban North Conservancy and Enviro Fixers Durban North – the Swapo Road (Broadway) and Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington) precinct has begun taking shape.

The collective known as ‘The Heart of Durban North’ has also worked with the eThekwini Parks Department and Marshall Security, as well as ward councillor Shontel de Boer, in a cleaning and greening project in the area’s business district.

Several flower beds in and around the area have been spruced up with indigenous, water-wise plants, and several broken street signs have been replaced, to name a few successes of the project.

Ashleigh Rosenbaum, owner of Kensington SuperSPAR, said the collective had more projects planned for the area in the hopes of making it a beautiful precinct.

“We started dreaming up this initiative in late 2021. The goal was to give back to the community and take on various projects to uplift what is essentially the heart of Durban North. We have had positive engagements with the eThekwini Municipality and the Parks Department where we have successfully managed to get the streetlight poles painted, street bulbs replaced, the painting of parking bays and road markings, the repair of broken paving and street signs replaced. We also engage regularly with the cleaning contractors,” Rosenbaum explained.

She also praised the work of Enviro Fixers and the trustee of the Durban North Conservancy, Jane Troughton.

“Late last year, they managed to completely revamp both the bottom of Swapo Road circle and the flower bed outside the Total garage. Both look phenomenal. Some of the plants were donated by the Parks Department, and many plants were paid for from our Heart of Durban North funds. These areas really make a huge difference and have dramatically beautified our area,” she said.

There is now also a dedicated security guard provided by Marshall Security to patrol the footpaths in the area.
