aQuellé Tour Durban confirmed as a seeding event

The cycling race will act as a seeding event for the 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

THIS year’s aQuellé Tour Durban is aiming to provide for all cyclists and will be a seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The two days of aQuellé Tour Durban action will provide thousands of off-road and on-road cyclists with a choice of six distances, ranging from under 15km to over 110km. There will be three mountain bike events on Saturday, May 13 and three road races on Sunday, May 14.

Race director Alec Lenferna was able to confirm that completing the long road race at the aQuellé Tour Durban will count as a seeding event for the 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

“Our aim for 2023 has been to make the aQuellé Tour Durban a must-do event for anybody in KZN who owns a bicycle, and that means having routes that cater for the top riders and the weekend warriors, as well as the youngsters or even the part-timers who may have to dust off their bikes before a ride,” said Lenferna.

“Many of the experienced riders target the Cape Town Cycle Tour each year, and so it is important to ensure there are a few well-organised races in KZN that can be used as seeding events. With that in mind, we are very happy to announce that we have had fruitful discussions with the Cycle Tour organisers, and they have confirmed the 2023 aQuellé Tour Durban will continue to be a seeding race for their event.

“However, we also have to be mindful of the fact that a large portion of the field do not necessarily want to do a race of over 100km, and for some, a race of that distance is simply not an option. We have to put on an event that caters for a wide variety of riders and not only those who want to take on a 100km challenge,” he said.

The routes for both the road race and the mountain bike race are mostly finalised, and Lenferna and his team are in the process of getting them signed off by the relevant authorities, after which they will be released to the public and the route maps added to the website and social media channels.

Entries for Tour Durban are due to open on February 1 on www.roag.org.
