La Lucia ridge resident praises community ‘paw’fect support

Ravitha Singh, a volunteer for Pug Rescue South Africa thanks the Durban community for their support.

OVER the festive period, La Lucia Ridge resident Ravitha Singh opened up her home to strangers for a good cause.

Singh’s home was bedecked and adorned with a vast array of Christmas-light displays and offered a drive-thru experience for those looking for the best lights in the area.

Singh, a volunteer for Pug Rescue South Africa, had encouraged those visiting to donate a can of tinned dog food if they wanted to.

Pug Rescue SA rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes unwanted, abandoned, neglected and surrendered pugs.

As word began to spread, residents and visitors donated hundreds of tins of food and made cash donations to the organisation as their way of making a difference.

“The uptake from the community was incredible. It wasn’t necessary for those visiting to see the Christmas lights to donate a can of dog food, but people wanted to help. In all, we collected 131 cans of dog food which will be donated to the organisation. We were blown away by the generosity of those who also donated cash. We really wanted to spread the word and draw awareness to the amazing work that Pug Rescue SA does, and I think we achieved that,” she said.

Glenashley resident and foster mom, Lynn Cowie, echoed Singh’s sentiments.

“In my time as a volunteer for Pug Rescue, I’ve fostered more than 25 surrenders and rescues over a four-year period. I’ve always had a heart for animal causes, but the more I learned about Pug Rescue, the more I knew how special the organisation was. I hope, with the various events we have planned this year, to continue to spread awareness about the organisation and hopefully encourage other people to foster, too,” she said.
