Durban and Coast SPCA urges owners to claim their pets
Between December 1 and January 2, the SPCA took in more than 1 000 stray and unwanted animals.
MARKETING manager for the Durban & Coast SPCA, Tanya Fleischer, has urged the north Durban community to reclaim their pets.
Fleischer said that between December 24 and January 2, the association saw close to 500 stray and unwanted cats, kittens, puppies and dogs being admitted.
“Thankfully, over the New Year’s period, we had no firework-related injuries. To date, only 11 animals have been claimed by their owners. Others are still waiting for their owners or are waiting for new homes,” she explained.

She added, the number of stray and unwanted animals between December 1 and January 2 stands at 1 400.
“Our inspectorate was kept busy during December with more than 250 calls for collections of stray and unwanted animals.”
She also urged pet owners to microchip their animals.
“If you have lost your pet, please visit us to check if your pet is here or call the kennels department during office hours to complete a lost-pet report on 031 579 6524/6. We urge pet owners to microchip your pets as this is the best and easiest way for them to get back to you in the event that they get lost. You can even book with the SPCA to have your pets microchipped,” she said.
