Durban North youngster crowned Turbo Javelin champ

Quade Strydom was crowned the KZN and SA U9 champ in the sport of Turbo Javelin.

THE sport of the javelin throw has been a part of the modern Olympic Games since 1908 and is associated with strength and dexterity.

Athletes hurl a narrow cylindrical spear the farthest distance possible in the sport, but few know the precursor to the athletics sport, Turbo Javelin.

One person who is quite adept at the sport is Durban North resident Quade Strydom.

The nine-year-old was, earlier this year, crowned the KZN and SA U9 champ in the sport of Turbo Javelin.

Quade, a Grade Three learner at Durban Preparatory High School (DPHS), has been reaching far in the sport and said his goal is to represent South Africa on a world stage.

“I realised I was good at throwing at my school’s athletics day. I was named the Victor Ludorum this year, but it was my throwing arm that got the attention of my coach. He suggested I try out Turbo Javelin, and I instantly took a liking to the sport. It has been a good opportunity for me as I’ve learnt a lot and achieved so much in a short space of time. I’m honoured and proud to have been crowned SA and Provincial Champ, and it has given me the confidence to retain my titles at next year’s KZN and South Africa Athletics Championships,” he said.

Quade’s performances have also seen him selected for the SA Schools Athletics Champs in February next year, and he has set himself an attainable goal.

“I want to break the record of how far I can throw it. This year, I missed by two centimetres, and I’m confident my training will help me reach my goal,” he said.

Quade’s favourite athlete is record-breaking sprinter Usain Bolt, and like the Jamaican athlete, he hopes to one day shine for his country.
“My ultimate goal is to represent South Africa at an Olympic Games, a Commonwealth Games or even the World Athletics Champs,” he said.

Based on his performances, it won’t be long before you see Quade’s star on the rise.
