Durban North orchestra plays for charity

Twenty-two young musicians from the Durban North Youth Orchestra filled the Mildene Park Retirement Village Hall with melodic Christmas carols to evoke the festive spirit.

THE Durban North Youth Orchestra held a Christmas Carols Concert for charity at Mildene Park Retirement Village on Tuesday, December 14.

Filling the Hall with melodic Christmas carols were 22 orchestral musicians conducted by veteran music teacher Jennifer Gaul.

Jennifer said the concert was a way for the children to give back.

“It was essentially so the children could make some contribution to the needy. Mildene Park has charities that they support, and so they offered us the venue so we could play there, and the money made will go to whichever charities they choose. The Dog and Puppy Rescue Centre is one of their big charities, so we hope that we’ll get some money for them,” said Jennifer.

She said her love for music started when she was in primary school, and she has been teaching music for the past 40 years.

“My love for music started in Grade One, which was called Sub A in Cape Town where I started school. The first time I saw a piano, I got home and told my mum that there was this thing the teacher played and it had black and white things on it – she told me it was a piano and bought me one when I was nine,” she said.

Jennifer said she was grateful to Mildene Park for allowing them to use their hall to play.
