Man arrested with explosives on M41 near uMhlanga

The suspect was travelling from Phoenix to Durban when he was arrested.

A JOINT operation between the Hawks Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Ethekwini District Task Team resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man for the contravention of Explosives Act on Tuesday morning on the M41 near uMhlanga.

It is believed the suspect was travelling from Phoenix to the Durban CBD when members of law enforcement cornered the taxi and arrested the suspect.

“Members received information about a suspect who was in possession of commercial explosives. It is alleged that the suspect was in the minibus taxi that was travelling to Durban. The said taxi was intercepted on the M41 and the suspect tried to escape but he was arrested. Commercial explosives were found in his bag,” Mhlongo said.

The M41 between La Lucia Ridge and uMhlanga was closed to traffic for several hours as members of the bomb squad ensured the area was safe.

“Explosives Unit and Local Criminal Record Centre were summoned to process the crime scene as well as to secure the exhibits. The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, November 24,” he said.

Mhlongo added he could not comment on allegations that the suspect may be linked to a cash-in-transit gang, and said no evidence had yet been found to confirm this.
