Public Servants Association to embark on national strike

The PSA will commence with the national public servants’ strike on Thursday, November 10.

THE Public Servants Association (PSA) and the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa), will embark on a national strike from November 10.

The strike will have an impact on the activities of various departments, including Home Affairs, Transport, and Border Control.

In Durban, public servants will march through the streets of Durban to hand over a memorandum to KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube at City Hall.

Provincial manager for PSA in Durban Mlungisi Ndlovu said they do not anticipate nor plan to block any major routes.

The PSA issued the union’s strike notice on October 24 this year after a deadlock was reached in salary negotiations, following Government’s offer of a 3% increase and the upcoming discontinuation of the cash gratuity after March 31, 2023.

“The PSA has demanded a revised offer of a 6.5% increase and the continuation of the cash gratuity beyond 31 March 2023. Public servants, like other employees and taxpayers, are feeling the severe effects of major price increases for fuel, transport and food as well as interest-rate hikes. The cash gratuity, which is not pensionable and thus not an ultimate solution, assisted public servants, and if retained beyond March 2023, will further assist public servants who have not received a salary increase for the past three years,” the association said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) says Government has put measures in place to mitigate the impact of strike action by public servants on Thursday.

The department said all provisions related to the management of employees participating in the protected strike shall apply.
