Diwali, a religious celebration for the Hindu religion, is commemorated around the globe today.
DIWALI or Deepavali is a major celebration in the Hindu faith and is commemorated around the world today.
The name Diwali comes from the words for the row of clay lamps that are traditionally lit outside homes commemorating the day.
Diwali, also known as The Festival of Lights, is synonymous with lights and candles which symbolise an inner illumination protecting from the darkness without, or the ultimate triumph of good over evil, or knowledge becoming victorious over ignorance.
Diwali is commemorated over five days. Each day includes different activities, such as cleaning the home; decorating the home with clay lamps; gathering with family for prayer, followed by a meal and fireworks; visits with friends and relatives on the first day of the new year, and finally, brothers visiting their married sisters on the fifth day of Diwali.
The celebrations are associated with the goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, and the god of wisdom, Ganesha.
