Elusive Mozambican spitting cobra spotted on uMhlanga Promenade

Sunningdale snake rescuer said snake activity has picked up in the last two months as the mating season of many species, including the Mozambican spitting cobra, has begun.

THE Mozambican spitting cobra that has found a home for itself along the vegetation on the uMhlanga Promenade has been spotted again.

The venomous snake was last spotted on the promenade in January this year and has seemingly come out of hiding due to rising temperatures.

Local snake rescuer Jason Arnold said he fielded calls from members of the public who spotted the snake sunbathing on the pavement of the promenade near the raised boardwalk.

“The cobra had disappeared for the winter months, but about two weeks ago, I had a few people report sightings of him. The snake seems to be comfortable in that area, particularly since he has the Hawaan Forest to the north of him, which would be an ideal habitat for him.

“I think he likes the openness of the pathway and enjoys the heat generated by the sun shining on the paving stones. The cobra often slithers away when people approach, and again, I ask that residents or visitors contact me rather than attempting to approach the cobra,” he said.

Arnold said that the best way not to get bitten by a snake is to not interfere with it.

“Snakes only become scared and defensive when they are put in a position where they feel their life is being threatened.”
