Durban SPCA appeals for ‘fur’ever home for pooch dumped in drain

Lucy was dumped in July of this year in uMlazi.

THE Durban and Coast SPCA is looking for a loving home for a dog that was deliberately thrown down a drain and left to die.

Marketing manager Tanya Fleischer said Lucy was dumped in July of this year in uMlazi with another case of animal cruelty seemingly linked to her abandonment.

“What we suspect is that someone deliberately threw her down a drain. Unfortunately, in this case, we don’t know who it was, and there are no witnesses. All we know is that, not far from where Lucy was found, another dog was found hanged. And it seems the two cases are linked. If you think that no one could be so cruel, you’re mistaken.

“Our inspectors often deal with this level of cruelty. Our hearts are breaking for the hanged dog. It’s awful to think how he must have struggled helplessly to escape the noose, as he slowly choked to death. And we can’t even begin to bring the perpetrator to book, but we can help Lucy,” she said.

Lucy is nursed back to health by the staff at the SPCA.

According to Fleischer, she was rescued by inspector Lucas Moloi.

“She was little more than a pup when inspector Moloi rescued her, and she was very nervous and painfully thin. We’ve spent the last three months talking to her with soothing words and gentle hands. We have given her a special diet, and she has regained her health and confidence. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find her forever home yet, and we are appealing to residents for help,” Fleischer said.

If you would like to help Lucy find a home, contact 031 579 6524/6 – her reference is 102459.

Fleischer added that home checks apply and that people can meet her at their Springfield Park premises, 2 Willowfield Crescent, from Monday to Friday (08:00 to 15:30).
