Durban North couple celebrate Diamond Jubilee

Bala and Nancy Harrod spoke to the Northglen News about their love for each other and the recipe for a healthy relationship.

FAITH has been a central tenet of Bala and Nancy Harrod’s 60 years together.

The Durban North couple, who celebrate their Diamond Jubilee on Thursday, October 6, spoke to the Northglen News about their love for each other and the recipe for a healthy relationship.

Bala and Nancy were both part of the church youth and knew each other six years before they got married in 1962.

“You could say we’ve known each other for 66 years really. There was something about Bala that made me know I was going to marry him,” Nancy explained. “While love and respect for each other has been important in our relationship, I must also mention that it is through God’s grace that we have stayed strong in our bond. I always say a family that prays together stays together.

“There will never be a relationship without its ups and downs. We had six children – five daughters and one son – and three have sadly passed on. That was a massive test of our faith, but we always had each others backs, and we were supportive of each other in tough times. We also have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who bring us such joy in our lives,” she said.

Bala explained that the doting couple intended to have a family dinner to celebrate their anniversary this week.

“It will be a small family get-together. Just having our family around us is something we take great pride in. I hope that our marriage serves as an example of how to navigate the good times and the bad. Respect, patience, and most of all, faith must be a feature of your life. We always make time to go to church, and I would say faith has been something we live by and has been at the core of our 60 years together,” he said.
