Durban North couple toast 65 years in love

As committed Christians, Jo and Graham Warwick believe God has played a part in their longevity and prosperity.

IF there is one day that Graham Warwick remembers, it is the day he asked his then-girlfriend, Jo, to marry him.
The Durban North couple celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, October 5.

As committed Christians, the Warwicks believe God has played a part in their longevity and prosperity.

“Jo used to work with my mother at a clothing store in Gweru (formerly Gwelo) in Zimbabwe. I had never taken a girl out before, and she had never had a boyfriend before. We went on a few dates to the movies, but I remember the day I asked her to marry me. I went to her house to ask her stepfather and her mother for permission, and I was incredibly nervous.

“I remember wringing my hands, and Jo definitely had an inkling as to what was going on. I kept fiddling with the ring in my pocket, and eventually, her stepfather said, ‘You are going to ask if Jo can marry you, aren’t you?’ That helped break the ice and put everyone at ease, and I’m happy to say she said yes,” Graham said.

When asked about advice for young couples starting out on their journeys, Jo said the key is to always work on your relationship.

“We firmly believe God has kept us together. He has helped us weather every storm. I also have to say you have to work at your marriage. Every marriage has its ups and downs, but the key is to work through your differences, stay true to each other and communicate openly. It can be very fulfilling knowing you were able to work together. Our marriage has given us so much including our two children and four grandchildren; they are all the light of our lives,” she said.

As they celebrate their 65th Anniversary or Blue Sapphire Anniversary, the couple say they hope to celebrate the occasion by visiting their daughter who teaches in Cambodia – next year.
