Briardene Primary School unveils first library

The school has seen its first-ever tuckshop, hall, computer centre and now, its very first library.

IN the past two decades, Briardene Primary School has seen a number of firsts under the leadership of principal Lenny Bowes, who has served in the role for the past 22 years.

The school has seen its first-ever tuckshop, hall, computer centre and now, its very first library.

Bowes says both he and his staff are passionate about literacy and jumped at the chance when various sponsors came on board to help build the library.

“Libraries are gateways to knowledge and education. This is a dream come true of having our first-ever library. We have more than 1 000 learners at the school, and this was sorely needed. For me this is also about leaving a legacy behind as I near retirement,” the 62-year-old said. “I see this being a vehicle of change for our youngsters in years to come. Of course, none of this would’ve been possible without the sponsorship of NGOs and those who helped contribute to make this dream a reality.”

The library, which took a month to furnish and build, has been named the Lenny Bowes Resource Centre.

Bowes added that the school was also looking forward to incorporating three of its mobile libraries donated through the Professor Yusuf Karodia’s Million Books Campaign.
