Spay campaign planned for Greenwood Park

To sterilise, fully vaccinate and treat any other illnesses picked up on the day will cost R550 per animal.

SAFE Fostering Network, an animal rescue organisation that was initiated earlier this year, will hold a spay campaign in Greenwood Park in November and is looking for funding to make this drive possible.

“SAFE will be joining the National Sterilisation Programme and Dr Annelize Roos and her team to undertake a much-needed large-scale spay and vaccination campaign in the Greenwood Park and surrounding areas for dogs and cats from impoverished homes. The goal is to raise enough funds to spay, neuter and fully vaccinate 600 animals in this first project,” said Kerry Janke who is a director at the organisation.

The organisation is also looking for funding to get 11 pups and two adult dogs into foster homes.

SAFE Fostering Network is based in Durban and is standing up to play its part in seeing change for thousands of homeless, abused and neglected dogs in KZN.

“We were contacted recently about 19 pups and two adult dogs in dire situations. Eight of them have gone into foster homes and one of them is in terrible condition and had to be rushed off to the vet. The vet bills can range from anywhere between R10 000 and R17 000. The other pups also needed specialised food which cost R7 000,” said Janke.

She said an average healthy pup costs SAFE around R3 000 from the time they are uplifted to the time they are adopted.

“This cost covers vet check, vaccinations, dewormer, microchip, shampoo, bed, food for four weeks and a bowl and blanket. A sick pup averages an additional R5 000 each,” she added.

“We have the fosters – we have the ability to save these guys. We just need to get the funds to cover a rescue this big,” added Janke.
