Sunningdale resident shows support for SPCA at fundraiser

A total of R63 500 was raised for the Durban & Coast SPCA at their International Homeless Animals' Day event.

RESIDENTS showed their support last weekend by helping raise funds for the Durban and Coast SPCA and raised awareness on International Homeless Animals’ Day.

International Homeless Animals’ Day, which falls on every third Saturday in August, was created in the hopes of increasing awareness around the homeless pet population worldwide.

Those who participated in the association’s fundraiser, booked a night in SPCA’s Springfield Park’s kennels and had to be bailed out by raising R800.

In all, a total of R63 500 was raised by participants for the SPCA.

One of those who raised awareness on the evening was Sunningdale resident Senta Seele.

“Although our photos were lighthearted, we were well aware of the significance of the evening and what it means for thousands of homeless animals around the world. We effectively had to be ‘bailed’ out by raising R800, which is the adoption fee at the SPCA, but people and our supporters went beyond that, which was so amazing.

“I was joined by two of my good friends, Tilanie Grote and Sue St Leger, and what was really special is that the Robin Hood Foundation pledged R3 000 for each of us. I must give credit to the SPCA for a well-thought-out event, and I was so happy to give back to such a deserving charity. When I was chairlady of the KZN Women in Business, we worked very closely with them and we built up such a good relationship that we had to support them in whatever way we possibly could,” she said.

Marketing manager for the SPCA Tanya Fleischer said the association sees more than 13 000 homeless animals through its doors each year.

Speaking on the evening, Fleischer said she was thrilled with the vibe and energy from everyone involved.

“I think everyone who participated had fun. We had visitors come through to support the evening, and we had a few fun activities lined up. We are so grateful for all those who contributed. To raise more than R63 000 was just phenomenal. This was really about continuing to give homeless animals a safe and warm place while they wait for their second chance at life,” she said.
