Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre was alerted to a theft incident in the uMhlanga area on Sunday afternoon where a suspect driving a white VW Golf 7 had stolen a cellphone from a female whom he had offered a lift to.

Members were asked to be on the lookout.

“The same VW Golf was spotted travelling on Umhlanga Rocks Drive later that afternoon. Our members followed the vehicle and brought it to a stop near Lighthouse Road,” said Marshall spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

It was determined that the suspect matched the same description, and he was arrested.

He was found in possession of two cellphones, one of which he could not account for.

“It was later established that the cellphone had been stolen a few minutes prior to our members arresting the suspect. The victim was informed and opened a case at the Durban North SAPS,” said Powell.

Durban North SAPS took over and is investigating.

“The suspect is believed to be involved in numerous cases of theft in the uMhlanga area using the same modus operandi. We urge members of the public to report any form of crime to the SAPS and to be cautious in terms of accepting lifts from strangers,” he said.
