Greenwood Park CPF crime awareness event a hit with community

The event saw various structures and various security companies and rescue teams enact real-life hijacking and rescue demonstrations at the Blackburn Road grounds.

CHAIRMAN of the Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum (CPF), Charles Naidoo, has hailed the inaugural Crime Awareness Community Open Day a resounding success.

The event saw various structures within the CPF, including its revived Youth Desk initiative, partner with various security companies and rescue teams who also enacted real-life situations at the Blackburn Road grounds.

Naidoo said, based on the success and feedback from residents and role-players, he hoped to make the event an annual one.

“We were really blown away by the support from the residents and the rescue and emergency personnel who attended the event. This was all about fostering a stronger relationship between everyone, and I feel the day really did bring the north Durban community together. We also hoped the event would bridge the gap between the informal and formal communities and SAPS. We had a number of learners who attended Avoca Secondary School perform, which just lit up the event.

“Ultimately, we want to create structures within each community so they can get involved in fighting crime. The CPF plays a vital role in that, and we hope that people learning about what we do would encourage them to join hands in the fight against crime. I really hope this event will be held annually going forward. We have various other projects and awareness campaigns lined up, so watch this space,” he said.

The Greenwood Park SAPS, various security companies, the fire department and the Natal German Shepherd Dog Club were also present at the event.

“I think the demonstrations really showcased the skills of the men and women putting their lives on the line on a daily basis. Both the fire department and several ambulance services re-enacted an extrication of a patient using the Jaws of Life. We had an anti-hijacking demonstration by the Natal German Shepherd Dog Club which the community particularly enjoyed,” he said.

The CPF Youth Desk also held a presentation on its roles within the community.
