Collection started for victims of Tongaat tornado

The KwaZulu-Natal Government has confirmed five fatalities after a storm and strong winds battered the KZN coastline on Monday afternoon.

WARD 35 councillor Nicole Bollman has begun a disaster relief collection for victims of the heavy rains and strong winds that left a trail of destruction in Tongaat (oThongathi) on Monday evening.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued a Level 4 alert for the KZN coastline on Monday, and so far, five people have sadly lost their lives in the eThekwini Metro which has been hardest hit.

Dozens more are being treated for injuries in healthcare facilities.

The Tongaat area, in the north of Durban, has recorded the most incidents, with several homes severely damaged, roofs blown off and trees falling on electricity lines causing power outages.

Because of this, Bollman has begun a collection for those affected, and she hopes the community can make a meaningful difference to those in need.

“Over the years, I’ve witnessed our community’s incredible resilience and compassion in times of need. I’m calling on residents to support our neighbours in Tongaat who have been devastated by the tornado. I’ve coordinated with several stakeholders for drop-off points. At this point, we are calling for non-perishable food items, clothing, blankets, toiletries and bottled water to help those who have lost everything,” she said.

Drop-off points:

  • Eastmans SuperSpar, 42 Ashley Avenue, Glenashley
  • ENS, 45 Hilken Drive, Herrwood Park, uMhlanga
  • Grace Family Church, 29 Flanders Drive, Cornubia

Meanwhile, the storms and strong winds also affected communities in the Amajuba District and Umzinyathi District, Newcastle, Dannhauser, Nquthu and surrounding areas.

Disaster teams are currently assessing the extent of the damages while providing immediate relief, including accommodating displaced residents in government buildings.
