Independent Examinations Board high schools, Fatima and Reddam, celebrate 100% pass rate

Northglen News visited Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School and Reddam House Umhlanga after the release of their excellent results.

THE Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced an overall pass rate of 98.46% in the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations – slightly higher than the 98.4% recorded in 2022.

All the candidates who passed the IEB 2023 NSC examinations achieved a pass that grants them access to tertiary study at one of three levels:

– 88.59% of the matric class of 2023 achieved a degree pass – compared to 89.32% in 2022;
– 8.31% achieved a diploma pass – compared to 7.52% in 2022; and
– 1.57% achieved a higher certificate pass – the same level recorded in 2022.
– 15 186 learners wrote the IEB exams in October and November.

The IEB and its board congratulated the Matric Class of 2023 and that despite challenges faced, ‘their performance attests to the fact that diligence, persistence and perseverance form the key ingredients for achieving success’.

“To those who have not succeeded, do not despair. There are still avenues and options available to succeed in their educational journey,” says the IEB.

Reddam House Umhlanga

Reddam House Umhlanga had much to celebrate this Thursday as their students achieved a 99% Bachelor’s Degree pass, a 100% pass rate (for the seventh consecutive year), and a 75.67% group average.

“I am feeling absolutely proud – proud of our students, proud of our staff. They worked together to achieve these amazing results,” comments Principal Adam Rogers. “These,” continues Rogers, “are our best matric results to date in our school‘s history and even better because we are celebrating our school‘s 21st birthday this year. So it’s a real coming of age.”

Rogers says that the Matric Class of 2023 have achieved 276 subject As. “This equates to 3.13 distinctions per candidate – once again, the highest number ever achieved. Of the grade, 41% (almost half) obtained an A aggregate.”

“For the first time in our college’s history, we have two candidates, Jan Kirsten and Kiara Whiteboy, on the IEB’s Outstanding List – the top 150 students in the country – and one student, Caitlin Roden, on the IEB’s Commendable List – the top 260 students in the country.”

Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School

Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School had much to celebrate, too. Deirdre Horsfall, principal of Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School, is delighted with her matric students’ results.

The 61 matric students achieved a 100% pass rate, a 99% Bachelor’s Degree Pass, and 14 A aggregates (which is 23% of the grade). They also attained 141 subject As, a 76% grade average and 6 placings in the top 1% in the country for a subject.

“Obviously, having four outstanding achievers and one commendable achiever is a huge achievement for the school, but all the results are really good. Across the board, the girls have worked really hard, and it’s a testament to a great work ethic and lovely relationships that our girls have with their teachers – which makes learning a much more pleasurable experience. And I attribute that to the success of the school – it’s relational situation,” says Horsfall.

“We always miss them [the matrics], and then, we all move on. But we do – we think, ‘Oh goodness, how are we going to do without them?’, but then, the next girls are there, already filling in those shoes – which makes an exciting new year for us, as well.”
