Six people have died due to severe thunderstorms in eThekwini Metro

The City's Disaster Management unit responded to numerous calls on Saturday night.

ON Saturday (January 13), KwaZulu-Natal experienced severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, which left chaos in various places around the province and the greater Durban area.

The most significant damages have been reported in the eThekwini Metro. The City reports that their Disaster Management unit responded to many calls between 20:00 and 22:00 on Saturday night when the thunderstorm hit the coastal areas, inflicting severe damage to households, businesses and infrastructure.

At this stage, six fatalities have been confirmed under the eThekwini Metro.

The heavy rains have also caused damage to water and electricity infrastructure, leaving many communities in eThekwini without water and electricity.

“Our teams will be in contact with all the bereaved and affected families to provide the necessary support we normally provide to victims.

“Our disaster teams will continue with assessments to quantify the extent of the damages and costs as a result of the heavy rains,” said KwaZulu-Natal Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi.
