A support system for financial-institution pensioners

The Bank Pensioners Society in Durban is calling on financial institution pensioners to join their society of support.

LOOKING out for former financial-institution employees, the Bank Pensioners Society is calling on bank workers who have retired to join their club to help each other figure out life after retirement. Since their inception in 1969, the society was initially for bank pensioners, but in 2004, the society opened its doors to pensioners from all financial institutions.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Barry Smith of the organisation said the objective of the organisation is to look after the interest of their members and provide support to those in need. Smith said club members meet quarterly to network.

“We meet to collate information on the needs of pensioners from the financial sector and to provide a channel for their views. To keep in touch with older pensioners and annuitants in this way lightens hardships and assists generally in whatever way possible to lessen the burden. The society also assists member pensioners who find themselves in financial difficulties and those who require short-term financial assistance,” explained Smith.

While their meetings usually take place in the Upper Highway Area, Smith said the club is open to any pensioners who are in the Durban area.

“We have social functions and friendly gatherings where members can meet up to socialise with colleagues or friends and to share ideas and help when necessary. The gatherings also help to identify special offers tailored to pensioners’ needs and to communicate these to our members. We also support members running their own businesses in local areas,” he said.
