GALLERY: March steps up fight against human trafficking

The organisation has taken a proactive approach by visiting various schools and organisations throughout the year and creating awareness about human trafficking.

HUMAN-TRAFFICKING cases are escalating rapidly globally and ‘more needs to be done’ says Gloria deGee, founder of the Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre (UCEC).

UCEC, together with Durban North-based Disaster Relief Support and various other stakeholders, held a Stop Human Trafficking for Freedom Walk at Blue Lagoon on Saturday, attracting hundreds of supporters who want to stop the scourge of human trafficking.

“The event was a huge success. The talks given by activists were empowering and informative. The walk created the awareness we were hoping to create. We also had various people come and ask us to join UCEC and assist in the work we do. We do need continued support throughout the year as well as cash donations. Donations in kind, such as toiletries, clothing and the like are most welcome,” she said.

DeGee added that Durban was fast becoming a hotspot for human trafficking due to the city’s close proximity to a port. Trafficking cases have risen by 43% globally, and there have been cases where children, in particular, have been murdered for the purpose of organ harvesting.

“We want people to blow the whistle on crime – not just human trafficking, but on any crime. It all starts with us,” she said.

DeGee thanked all sponsors involved in making the event a success. To get in touch with UCEC, email admin@ucec.org.za or call 031 824 7951.
