WATCH: High-speed chase in uMhlanga leads to arrest

The suspect was arrested after a dangerous high-speed chase that ended in Durban Central Business District.

A THEFT-OUT-OF-MOTOR-VEHICLE incident that occurred at a well-known shopping centre in the uMhlanga area resulted in a high-speed chase through the area into the Durban CBD where one suspect was arrested.

Marshall Security received reports of the incident on Tuesday afternoon and that the suspects were travelling in a white VW Polo.

“The suspect’s vehicle was spotted on the M4 Ruth First Highway by members of our Special Operations Team. They immediately started to follow the vehicle, and the Durban North SAPS were promptly informed,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

The driver started to accelerate and drive recklessly when he saw armed response officers were on his trail.

“The driver shot through red robots and drove contraflow with total disregard to other road users, but this did not deter our dedicated team members,” he added.

The driver eventually stopped on Albany Grove in Durban Central where he and the suspects got out.

“Our team members immediately chased on foot and managed to apprehend one suspect who was found in possession of a remote jammer and a cellphone which is suspected to be stolen,” added Powell.

The remaining suspects, unfortunately, managed to evade arrest, blending in with the busy afternoon foot traffic in Durban’s busy city centre.

The Durban North SAPS arrived and found that the vehicle was fitted with cloned number plates. It also contained stolen property as well as car-breaking implements.

“The apprehended suspect is believed to be linked to numerous cases of theft-out-of-motor vehicle in the greater Durban area, including areas such as La Lucia, Westville and Morningside,” said Powell.

Durban North SAPS is investigating further.
