THE International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is a globally recognised event that aims to promote the ideals of peace, unity and harmony among all people.
This day, which is observed on September 21, encourages individuals, communities and nations to come together in the pursuit of global peace and conflict resolution. As an essential aspect of this observance, the day also serves as an opportunity to remember those who have lost their lives in violent conflicts and to demonstrate solidarity with those who continue to suffer as a result of ongoing strife.

Observing this special day, the South African government said this country has a unique history when it comes to peace as it underwent a significant transformation from an oppressive apartheid regime to a democratic society.
“International Day of Peace holds particular importance for South Africans as it serves as a reminder of the importance of social cohesion, tolerance and mutual respect in overcoming divisions. The legacy of leaders, such as Nelson Mandela, who fought tirelessly for an inclusive and peaceful nation, is celebrated on this day, reminding South Africans of the power of dialogue and understanding in conflict resolution,” said Government in the statement.
In South Africa, the International Day of Peace is observed through various activities and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and unity. Government said: “This may include cultural events, educational programmes, interfaith dialogues and community gatherings that encourage social cohesion and understanding among the diverse population.”
Government shares the four top things that can be done by South Africans to celebrate this special day.

- Plant a peace tree. The LEAF International Organisation helps schools around the globe plant trees for peace and prepare for a more sustainable future.
- Light a candle at dusk in support of world peace.
- Listen to special radio and television programmes which are aired on the day that feature discussions, interviews and documentaries related to peacebuilding, human rights, and social justice.
- Visit places like the Apartheid Museum, Robben Island and the Nelson Mandela Foundation on the International Day of Peace to learn more about South Africa’s history and the country’s journey toward peace and reconciliation.
