Planning to go on holiday? Here are 5 apps to add to your experience

Whether it’s to explore breathtaking landscapes, discover the rich cultural heritage of your destination or find venues to go out for dinner or a movie, there are several useful apps for holidaymakers.

SCHOOL holidays are around the corner, and if you are planning to go out with your family, here are five apps you should have on your phone.

Samantha Pillay, the Director of Ekko, a pioneering lifestyle brand catering to millennials, says that in today’s digital era, technology has become an indispensable tool.

“And, while we generally want to ‘switch off’ while on holiday, utilising the appropriate technology can serve as an excellent tool for our convenience and ease. It optimises our holiday experience and enables us to fully leverage the services it offers,” she said.

“In a world that’s ‘always on’, it’s no surprise that we are eager to disconnect from it all while on holiday. While stashing your phone away in the hotel room safe might be one solution, this means you could also be missing out on some valuable apps and tools to enhance your holiday experience. Instead, disconnect from ‘normal life’ by disabling email notifications and even WhatsApp alerts.”

This way, Pillay says people can have the freedom to choose when and how to engage with the world, striking a balance between work and relaxation, without compromising on their well-deserved time away.

Pillay suggests the following ones to ensure you get the best out of your break:

1. Booking apps: Have you ever spontaneously decided to extend your holiday or embark on a road trip, booking accommodation as you go? Booking apps provide the convenience and flexibility to secure accommodation while on the move. Moreover, this kind of app typically offers faster booking processes, extra features, and an overall enhanced user experience, compared to their website counterparts.

2. Navigation tools: Navigating through an unfamiliar area can be frustrating, and nothing dampens the joy of a holiday more than getting lost. That’s why navigation tools are essential to ensure seamless exploration. They empower you to roam our nation’s vibrant cities and picturesque landscapes with ease.

3. Weather apps: Using a weather app helps you plan activities and pack appropriately. Knowing the forecast in advance ensures you make the most of your time and avoid unexpected disruptions. Stay informed, be prepared and enjoy your holiday to the fullest, rain or shine.

4. Currency-converter apps: If you’ve travelled abroad before, you know the struggle of mentally converting currency values (despite being advised against it). However, when you’re on a tight budget, you often have no choice but to keep track of expenses. That’s where a currency-converter app comes in handy. It allows you to swiftly and accurately calculate currency conversions, helping you manage your budget effectively while travelling. No need for mental math any longer – you can ensure you stay within your spending limits with the help of a currency-converter app.

5. Loyalty apps:
By using loyalty apps, you can save money, receive special perks, or access upgraded services to add to your holiday enjoyment. For example, if you are a member of a loyalty programme, you get access to 2-for-1 coffees and movies, discounts to spas around the country, and R120 off countrywide dining. Loyalty apps allow you to do more for less.
