Here are a three ways you can observe the day:

Cut down on plastic use
Plastic may be cheap to use, but it’s non-biodegradable and comes with environmental implications.

Adopt-a-River director Janet Simpkins advises everyone to be more selective in their packaging options.

“Be selective in your packaging options and opt to use reusable coffee cups. In addition, carry your own water bottle and stay away from single-use plastics, and always recycle,” she said.

Check e-waste
Most e-waste produced is improperly disposed of, but that doesn’t have to be the case as there is a company in Durban that ensures E-waste is disposed of correctly.

Thobekile Nzimande, a compliance solutions provider for Recycle-X in Ballito, said e-waste can be disposed of at their premises.

“E-waste should not be disposed of with everyday household garbage because it could possibly end up in our oceans,” she said.

“Another reason why e-waste and appliances should be disposed of properly is that many items are comprised of hazardous substances. For example, lithium batteries should not be thrown into a bin and end up in a landfill,” she added.

Save water

One of the biggest effects of climate change has been the decreasing levels of safe drinking water.

The eThekwini Municipality recently offered some of tips to save water:

– If you have rain tanks, use this water wherever possible in the home.

– Designate one glass or bottle for your drinking water a day, so you don’t have to keep washing glasses.

– Check your home and premises for water leaks and learn how to use your water meter to check for leaks.

– Keep a close eye on your water bill to help spot leaks.

– Only use your washing machine and dishwasher for full loads.

– Don’t let the tap run while you wash vegetables.

– If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running for rinsing.

– Soak pots and pans instead of running the tap while you scrape them.
