Support Durban and Coast SPCA fundraiser for homeless animals

International Homeless Animals’ Day, which falls on the third Saturday every August, was created in the hopes of increasing awareness of the homeless pet population worldwide.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA is urging animal lovers across the city to go the extra mile this International Homeless Animals’ Day by booking a night in their kennels.

International Homeless Animals’ Day, which falls on the third Saturday in August, was created in the hopes of increasing awareness around the homeless pet population worldwide.

Marketing manager for the SPCA, Tanya Fleischer, said the association sees more than 13 000 homeless animals through its doors each year.

“Some of the animals are abandoned, some unwanted, some abused and some living on the streets. This year, we want residents to brave our kennels for the night. We are asking Durbanites to leave their nice comfy bed for 14 hours and rough it out in our kennels for the plight of homeless animals.

“We need your support to continue giving homeless animals a safe and warm place while they wait for their second chance at life, and we hope to do that with our fundraiser,” she said. This year, on Saturday, August 20, participants can book a kennel for the night at the SPCA’s Springfield Park premises.

“We are urging anyone who would like to support us to take videos/photos and post them to your social media account with the hashtag #helpinghomelessanimals and tag us @spcadbn. We also have some awesome prizes to hand out at the event,” Fleischer said.

To book a spot in the kennels for the fundraiser, it costs R125 per human and R25 per dog.

“You can also ask your friends and family to sponsor your ‘adoption’ out of the kennels for R800. Sign up today on Quicket.co.za or visit our website (www.spcadbn.org.za) for more information and how you can support the event,” she said.

Fleischer added that all funds raised will help homeless animals in areas across Durban and the KZN North Coast regions.
