Concern over possible landslide on Prince Mhlangana Road
Councillor Bobby Maharajh has expressed his concern and says the area behind the above-ground pipe requires urgent attention.
WHILE repair work to the damaged section of the above-ground sewerage pipe on Prince Mhlangana Road has been completed, Ward Councillor Bobby Maharajh has expressed his concern over a possible landslide on the same road.
During heavy rains earlier this year, several pump stations, as well as sewerage pipelines, were damaged, including this section of pipe near the Island Circle, Effingham Road intersection.
At the time, residents and conservationists raised the alarm over raw sewage flowing into a tributary feeding the Umgeni River.

Maharajh said he hoped the eThekwini Municipality would take urgent action as soon as possible.
“While we welcome the repair work to the above-ground pipe, there was some concern for the area behind the pipe which had been washed away in a landslide. When you look at the bank behind the pipe, there is a real and pressing concern that heavy rains may cause a further wash-away and possibly compromise the pipe network once again. When I last spoke to the contractor, a plan was formulated to deal with that area that warrants further attention,” he said.
“All the residents in the area have welcomed the repair to stop the sewage flow, but they are also worried about further setbacks. In my opinion, the bank has to be stabilised before any more soil is eroded, especially as we near the rainy season,” he said.
