Durban North netball pro to hit the road running for a worthy cause

At first, Mthembu's friends said they didn't want to run with her because she runs too fast, but she convinced them and told them it was not a competitive race.

A DURBAN NORTH netball coach has been chosen as a brand ambassador for the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge which takes place in September.

This year’s beneficiary is the SPAR Petals Project which, in partnership with other charities, will donate sanitary pads to young women and girls in schools, enabling them to not miss school while menstruating.

Precious Mthembu, an isiZulu and physical education teacher and netball co-ordinator at Danville Girls High School, told Northglen News she encourages everyone to take part in the upcoming event.

“It’s a virtual event, and it’s only five kilometers. You can run, jog or walk and invite your friends to join in. It’s all about socialising while supporting a worthy cause,” she said.

This is the second time Mthembu has been chosen as an event ambassador. She has also won the 2021 KZN Sport Personality of the Year award, has 97 National Netball Caps, is currently the U21 Baby SPAR Proteas Assistant Coach and the U19 SA Netball Head Coach.

“Last year, I split the race between running with friends at the Durban promenade and running with the children at the Waterloo township. I enjoyed every bit of it,” she said.

At first, Mthembu’s friends said they didn’t want to run with her because she runs too fast, but she convinced them and told them it was not a competitive race.

“It’s more about socialising and enjoying the scenery. I enjoyed last year’s run, and I am looking forward to this event. The theme is #IRise. It resonated with me because I rose above many challenges,” said Mthembu.

She is encouraging men to enter, too.
“Although the race is aimed at women, I encourage men to show their support and enter, too,” she said.

The event takes place on September 3 anytime from 06:00 to 18:00.

Entries cost R120 and include a T-shirt, medal, face buff, drawstring bag and a My Virtual Challenge magazine. There are options to have the packs sent via the delivery service Pargo (up to five race packs in one delivery) or delivered to participating SPAR stores.
