North Durban school celebrates Earth Day by planting trees

The children at the early childhood development centre learnt about 'Farming God's Way', with lessons on how to start and care for a veggie garden.

LIV Village School has always stressed the importance of caring for the environment to its learners, and on Earth Day this month, they were no different.

In fact, Earth Day became the theme for the months of April and May, and to celebrate the day, the school planted 12 trees on the school playground. The trees were donated to LIV School by Leitch Landscapes.

“At LIV Village School, the children have been learning about the importance of taking care of our planet. We are passionate about raising the next generation of leaders in South Africa who know how crucial it is to prioritise the restoration and care of our local and world environment,” said Johanne Moon, marketing manager for LIV Village School.

The children at the early childhood development centre learnt about ‘Farming God’s Way’, with lessons on how to start and care for a veggie garden.

“Our little farmers were very excited to get going and worked hard to prepare the soil and plant the seeds and seedlings. They planted beetroot, spinach, spring onion seedlings, and green bean seeds,” said Moon.

Every Nation City Bowl sponsored and helped the school create a veggie garden, while RTS Greytown donated seeds and seedings.

The importance of recycling was explored in the second part of the theme, where the children collected recycling items for two weeks and learnt how to sort items into: glass, metal, plastic and paper.

“With these recycled materials, our classes made crafts, and some even created their own toys. These crafts were displayed at our Earth Day Celebration,” she said.
