Continuous sewage spills frustrate Durban North residents, businesses

“Business owners and residents expect their living conditions to be up to acceptable health standards. Driving or walking through raw sewerage daily is not a healthy environment for residents of this city,” said Ward 36 Councillor Shontel de Boer.

RESIDENTS and business owners are disgruntled at continuous sewage spills in Flack Place off Mackeurtan Avenue, and Norrie Avenue.

A press release, issued by the DA on behalf of the area’s ward councillor, Shontel de Boer, states that sewage has spilled on Flack Place at least four times in the last two months.

It further stated that the sewerage system in Norrie Avenue has been overflowing for the past ten years.

“The City has not provided any solutions as to how they will fix the problem. The sewage is just flushed out each time which is only a temporary fix. Residents have to wait weeks, sometimes months before anyone attends to the matter,” said de Boer.

She added that businesses on Acutt Avenue have also endured sewage overflowing into their property for ‘approximately 10 years, if not more’.

“Despite numerous emails and messages, begging for assistance, nothing has been forthcoming,” she said.

“Businesses and residents are now tired of paying rates for services they are not receiving. Communities want simple service delivery for services they are paying for. They expect their living conditions to be up to acceptable health standards. Driving or walking through raw sewerage daily is not a healthy environment for residents of this city,” added de Boer.

The eThekwini Municipality did not respond at the time of publishing.
