All quiet on roads in and out of north Durban, says ward councillor

There have been no reports of protest action on any of the roads, says Ward 35 Councillor Nicole Bollman.

MAJOR routes in and out of Durban North and uMhlanga were given the all-clear this morning as threats of a national shutdown on Friday were nullified.

Leading up to Friday, June 10, various unsigned messages on social media platforms had called for a national shutdown, ostensibly due to the steep rise in fuel prices.

Speaking to Northglen News this morning, uMhlanga Councillor Nicole Bollman said that SAPS, Metro Police, security companies, CPFs and neighborhood watches monitored the situation overnight with nothing serious to report.

“Regarding the threats of a ‘national shutdown’, it would appear that traffic is moving as per usual through our ward and surrounding areas, and so nothing tangible to report back on protests and associated activities. In the interest of safety, please do remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to SAPS on 10111,” she said.

Greenwood Park resident, Duane Bengtson, the admin of the Nettow Traffic WhatsApp group, which has more than 800 people on its database, added that no protest action or fears of looting had materialised.

“I’ve been on patrol since 01:00 this morning in the north Durban area, and thankfully, there is nothing to report. The major routes, including the N2, N3 and M4, are clear of any protest action. There is just your regular early morning traffic,” he said.

On Thursday, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said Metro Police officers are on standby to respond to any ’unlawful conduct that could destabilise the economy of the city’.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) also said they are on high alert to prevent and combat any forms of criminality.
