5 easy ways to reduce consumption

Looking for a way to reduce your overall consumption and you don't know how? Well, keep reading to find 5 easy ways to reduce consumption, starting at home.

RECYCLING, creating zero-waste, and going green is a lifestyle choice.  Making choices to produce as little waste as possible saves resources and reduces pollution. There has been so much destruction and devastation to our natural environment, which is why it is vital to preserve the world around us.

1. Go plastic-free

Currently, billions of pieces of plastic can be found in swirling convergences that cover over 40% of the world’s oceans. Thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, seals, and other marine animals are killed each year as a result of consuming or becoming tangled in plastic. It is easy to reduce your plastic waste: when shopping, use reusable bags, avoid single-use water bottles, packets and straws, and as much as possible, avoid anything made of or packaged in plastic.

2. Think about your options before you shop

‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ may sound like a cliché, but it’s just as relevant today as it was when it was originally coined. From the materials needed to make it, to the pollution generated during manufacture, to the packaging that ends up in landfills, every thing we buy has an environmental footprint. So, before you go out and buy something, consider whether you truly need it. If you do, look for ways to purchase the item using minimum packaging and delivery services.

3. Consider reusable packaging

Disposable packaging may be easier and more convenient to use, but they are bad news for the environment. Reusable containers can be washed after each use, allowing you to reuse them for storage again and again.  Long-lasting and solid, they will last for years to come and also keep your food fresh for a decent amount of time, depending on the type of packing.

4. Make tote bags your best friend

Many people get put off when asked to purchase tote bags as they say that they forget to actually take them with when they go shopping. But for those of you who have way too many tote bags lying around, do you know they can actually be recycled? In fact, many totes are manufactured entirely of recycled materials, making them another environmentally friendly option to add to your zero-waste list.

5. Last but not least, be thrifty

Rather than purchasing new, trendy, fast-fashion items, that are more likely to end up in a landfill, buying preloved clothing at a thrift store is a terrific way to utilise pre-existing materials. Thrift stores have clothing, household items, and furniture that can be repurposed or upcycled in many different ways, all it takes is a bit of creativity.
