Water pipe left exposed for months on Kenneth Kaunda Road

A Durban North resident says he is frustrated at the eThekwini Municipality turning a blind eye to the exposed water pipe that leads from the road to his driveway.

IMTIAZ Osman, who lives on Kenneth Kaunda Road, told Northglen News that the water pipe had been exposed since the beginning of February, following repairs done to the water line at the end of January.

“The road was excavated, and new water pipes were installed. This resulted in a few homes not having water for three days on January 27, 28 and 29,” said Osman.

He then contacted the municipality, and a contractor was sent out to restore the water connection on January 30.

“The contractor, however, left the pipe exposed,” says Osman.

He contacted the City several times to send someone out to cover the pipe, however, to date, nobody had been deployed.

“Motorists have been driving over the pipe, and my fear is that it may burst and in turn escalate my water bill,” said Osman.

“It was not a proper repair to begin with. The contractor did a quick fix just so the water could be restored. The pipe is fragile and may burst as it is a very busy road,” he said.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said it was the first the City had heard of this.

“An investigation will be conducted,” he said.
