City on high alert after level 2 weather warning

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns Durban residents of damaging gale-force winds along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning.

THE South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning on the probability of damaging gale-force winds along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning.

The city of Durban has been cited as one of the areas along the coast that is likely to bear the brunt of these winds.

According to the SAWS, waves of between 4m to 6m high are expected between midnight on Sunday and 12:00 on Monday.

This is likely to trigger rough seas to the detriment of freight and recreational fishing vessels.

EThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said, “The mayor has instructed emergency personnel to be on standby after these stern warnings from the SAWS.”

He said the City is appealing to all residents, especially those residing in informal settlements, to be cautious when using fires during this period.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and update the public accordingly,” said Mayisela.
