Colour walk to brighten Durban North school’s birthday

The school, based in Durban North, celebrates its 10th birthday and has chosen this type of event to celebrate neurodiversity.

A SPECTACULAR array of colours will be the order of the day on Saturday, May 21 as Cornerstone Remedial School hosts its first-ever colour walk.

The school, based in Durban North, celebrates its 10th birthday and has chosen this type of event to celebrate neurodiversity. The multiple colours hold great significance in the world of neurodiversity.

Principal of the school, Shena Audhpersadh, said the untimed event is about having fun, creating awareness and fostering acceptance for neurodiversity in and out of school settings, and catering for the diverse social, emotional and academic needs for individuals.

“This event encompasses the vision set out by Calvin Pienaar when Cornerstone opened its doors and it will certainly be the biggest event we’ve hosted. The school turns 10 years old this year and although April was neurodiversity month, we weren’t able to celebrate that due to the KZN floods. As a remedial school that caters to learners from different backgrounds, we also hope the event will raise awareness regarding the misconceptions about neurological differences”.

“We want to recognise the talents of our neurodivergent learners and we felt the colour walk was the perfect way to do that. The bright colours match up well with the neurodivergent spectrum. All the funds raised from the event will go towards the procurement of specialised equipment for the school across the board; from our Solace Wing, a specialised autistic unit at the school where learners are taught on a more functional approach, to our remedial and special needs developmental and support units, all the way up to grade 9,” she explained.

Audhpersadh said the event is open to the public and there is an option for a 3km or 5km untimed walk for the event.

The Cornerstone Remedial School colour walk takes place on Saturday, May 21 at Giba Gorge. Participants can choose between a 3km and 5km untimed walk between 09:00 and 16:00. Tickets cost R150 for adults and R130 for children which includes a T-shirt, bottled water and colour powder. There will be a number of food stalls available as well as a sensory obstacle course and a jumping castle. Registration for the event closes on Sunday, May 15. Contact the school on 031 563 4404 to register.
